tonight's pink supermoon

Shiny ones,
This love letter is specifically timed for the full moon tonight. I have been doing moon circles for many years; I have been talking and singing to the moon since I was a child.

I remember learning about moon phases. For a while, I didn't understand why the moon changes or how those changes could be predictable. I was stunned when my parents knew that the moon would be full in a couple of days. As I gradually recognized the cycle, I was transfixed by any phase of it.

Not everyone finds the moon impressive, of course. In a certain sense, the moon doesn't doanything. It just shines, in varying phases. Some people discount the power of witnessing, in the sense of shining who you are. Some people downplay the significance of allowing change without struggle.

If you do, though, remember that the moon moves oceans. All of them. At once.

The lunar cycle affects all living beings—plants, animals, bacteria, fungi—that live within reach of moonlight. Living beings adjust feeding patterns, reproduction, migration, and more to the moon. For many human cultures, the moon determined, and still determines, calendars.

Tonight's supermoon is the brightest of the year. Poignant timing, as we are all in the depths from this pandemic. I'm reminded, doing my rituals, of the powerful witnessing that occurs when we bring things into the light.

In my last love letter, I encouraged you to create your own rituals, especially during this time. The full moon reminds us that whatever ritual work we do expands the collective field. Whatever you believe in, whatever you create sacred space for—your offering joins the offerings from everyone else.

So, I encourage you to find or create a ritual with the moon tonight. Talk to it like an old friend who knows how to listen fully, without judgement. Sing to it like you would to a child going to sleep or struggling in some way.

Place some sacred object(s) within the reach of moonlight, or objects that are not yet sacred. Put a glass of water within the reach of moonlight and drink the water tomorrow morning.

If your sleeping arrangement allows, sleep in a way that part of your body is bathed in moonlight at some point during the night.

Dance illuminated. Howl.

What you do is not trivial. Expand our field. What you do matters.

Shining with you,
S.
