the joy of skipping the holiday

I gave myself permission to skip Thanksgiving this year.

For a lot of reasons. Some broadly cultural, others very specific to me.

It was mostly an experiment, to see if I missed the usual family gatherings. I thought I might feel lonely, or guilty.

Guess what, gentle reader?

It was GLORIOUS.

I had a grand, mostly solitary day. My partner left in the morning and I hung out with the cats. I took a walk. Later, my brother visited and we took a walk.

No guilt, no sadness.

I'm sharing this not to insist everyone skip Thanksgiving. Rather, I hope you always give yourself permission to do what might be awkward or unusual.

During my mostly solitary holiday, I had plenty of time to feel grateful.

For loads of things. Not the least of which is to feel inspired and abundant in difficult, often despairing times.

And a big part of that is Sacred Fermentation.

In the past few months, over multiple rounds of fermenting, participants in Sacred Fermentation have chopped about a hundred pounds of vegetables.

We all get a share of the yield, and some of each round is donated. So far we've donated about 25 pounds of ferment to some families, all single mothers with children.

I'm grateful that I have the capacity to create a space for something that nourishes and heals. That's abundant enough to provide not just for people beyond those who have the means to contribute and participate.

That gratitude pulls me through a lot, and I hope you have similarly magical spaces to hold you.

Gratefully,
S.
